Game 8: Lewis-Clark State 5, Indiana Tech 4

May 26, 2001 at Harris Field

LEWISTON, Idaho – Nick Gravelle allowed just two earned runs in eight innings in pitching Lewis-Clark State to a 5-4 victory over Indiana Tech to complete the second round of the 45th annual Avista NAIA Baseball World Series at Harris Field Saturday.

LCSC (52-12), the two-time defending champions, are one of four remaining unbeaten teams in the tournament and will play Bellevue, Neb. (47-16) Monday night at 7 p.m. in the third round of the tournament. Indiana Tech (47-23) faces a loser-out game Monday at noon against Biola, Calif. (46-12).

Gravelle gave up eight hits, including a two-run home run to shortstop Jayme Morales in the seventh inning. He walked one and struck out eight in improving his record to 7-2.

Morales’ drive closed Lewis-Clark State’s lead to 4-3, but catcher Gabe Stajduhar made it 5-3 in the bottom of the frame with a drive over the centerfield wall. That run proved to be the difference as Indiana Tech got a run in the ninth off of LCSC closer Wes Hutchison on a home run by Nick Roberts.

Hutchison, who earned his second save in two tournament games, however, then struck out Ismail Cruz and got Adam Torres on a foul fly to right, stranding the tying run on second.

LCSC got some early offense, scoring three runs in the third inning to overcome a 1-0 deficit. The first run scored on an error. Second baseman Brendan Ryan then doubled to put Lewis-Clark State ahead 2-1, a lead they never relinquished. Matt Hellman drove in the third run with a ground out. The Idaho team scored its fourth run on an error. Brent Seifert, who is now 11-3, allowed 10 hits in going the distance. He walked two and struck out three.

Yoshi Kimura and Nick Bullen had two hits each to lead LCSC’s offense. Roberts and Morales each had two hits for Indiana Tech.

Earlier Saturday, Warner Southern, Fla., eliminated Ohio Dominican 15-13, and Biola, Calif., ousted Mobile, Ala., 19-2. Western Oregon stayed unbeaten with a 5-4 win over Dallas Baptist, Tex. 5-4.
