LEWISTON, Idaho – Warrior starter Carlos Fisher threw a complete game three-hit shutout and the No. 3 seed Lewis-Clark State Warriors (52-8) opened the 2004 Avista NAIA World Series with a 2-0 victory over the No. 6 seed Mount Vernon Cougars (39-18) at Harris Field Friday night.
Fisher, who came out on the winning side of a good pitcher’s dual, was perfect through 4 2/3 innings and struck out eight while walking only two as he improved to 8-1 on the season. Fisher’s counterpart, Adam Rowe, also went nine innings and tied a career high with 13 strikeouts.
The Warriors struck early as second baseman Justin Fuller scored from second on a throwing error by the first baseman Ty Dendinger in the opening inning. Fuller walked and then advanced to second on a wild pitch earlier in the inning.
In the top of fourth, L-C struck for the final time when shortstop Derek Bruce hit an RBI single down the leftfield line that scored Josh Celigoy from second base. Celigoy, who singled up the middle, advanced to second on Rowe’s wild pitch.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Cougar bats began to figure the Warrior ace out. With two outs in the innings, the Cougs strung together back-to-back singles to load the bases. With Kyle Peters on first, after leading off the inning with a walk, Chris McKinney singled to right and Steve Edwards singled to first to load the bases. Fisher then ended the game when Ari Yoder hit a grounder to second and McKinney was out on a fielder’s choice.
It was the second game of the day in which both pitchers threw a complete game. In game two, starters Michael Devaney and Tyler Piatz, went the distance for Concordia and William Penn respectively.
L-C next faces the winner of the Embry-Riddle/Point Loma Nazarene game on Monday at 7 p.m. Mount Vernon next faces Jamestown College at noon on Saturday.
