#6 Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) (40-18) def. Jamestown (N.D.) (46-10) 7-0
LEWISTON, Idaho – Nick Schwartz allowed only three hits to help Mount Vernon Nazarene of Ohio remain alive in the 48th annual Avista NAIA World Series with a 7-0 win over Jamestown in loser-out play at Lewis-Clark State College’s Harris Field on Saturday afternoon.
Schwartz (9-5) struck out four and walked three in his complete-game performance. He allowed only one baserunner as far as third, giving up two singles and a double. At one point, the 6-foot-6 255-pound right-handed sophomore retired 11 in a row.
Mount Vernon Nazarene (40-18) broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth inning when Steve Edwards singled and later scored on a suicide squeeze bunt by Ty Dendinger.
The Cougars added two more in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Chris McKinney and an error, and then made it 6-0 in the seventh with three runs. Kyle Peters provided the key hit with a two-run triple down the right-field line. He later scored on a single by Jason Irish.
Mount Vernon Nazarene’s final run came in the eighth on an RBI single by pinch-hitter Jerry Derr.
Peters went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead the Cougars, while Irish and Edwards added two hits apiece. Starting pitcher Geoff White (6-2) took the loss, allowing four hits, three runs – two of which were earned – and three walks in 5 1/3 innings.
Nate Burgard had a double for Jamestown, which was making its first NAIA World Series appearance. The Jimmies are the first team to be eliminated from the 10-team double-elimination tournament and they finish the season at 46-10.
Mount Vernon Nazarene will resume play on Monday at noon against the loser of Saturday night’s contest between top seed Oklahoma City (70-5) and No. 8 seed William Penn of Iowa (48-13).
