LEWISTON, Idaho -
Fifth-seeded Lee (Tenn.) struck early
and added to its lead throughout to
eliminate top-seeded Embry-Riddle (Fla.)
from the Avista-NAIA World Series at
Harris Field on Tuesday. The Flames
(50-13) have won three games in the
losers bracket after suffering a loss in
their first game. They must wait for
Tuesday's two other games to be played
out for their Wednesday opponent to be
determined.
For the second-consecutive year, the
No. 1 seed in the World Series exits
from the event after going 1-2. Last
year's No. 1 seed, Lewis-Clark State
(Idaho), bowed out after suffering
back-to-back losses following a
first-game win.
Embry-Riddle closes out its season in
its 10th World Series appearance and
finishes with a record of 51-11.
Curtis Camilli (9-2) was credited
with the win on the mound for the
Flames. En route to his second victory
in Lewiston, the junior limited the
Embry-Riddle bats to one hit and he
struck out one in 2 1/3 innings of work.
Starter Jay Bolen scattered five hits
and gave up two earned runs. He fanned
five and walked three.
Daniel Eaton (3-4) suffered the loss
for the Eagles. The sophomore allowed
one hit and two runs, one of which was
earned, in two innings of work. Phillip
Reamy entered in the top of the ninth
with a runner on first and two outs. The
senior was touched for three-consecutive
hits that allowed Lee to put two on the
scoreboard. Starter Kevin Maloney faced
six batters and allowed two earned runs
in the first inning before being
replaced by Brandon Creath.
Lee wasted no time getting runs on
the board, sending seven batters to the
plate, pounding out four hits and
sending two runners across. The Flames
tacked on another run in the top of the
third with a lead-off double from Joe
Ramirez. The junior came around to score
on Chris Grayson's sacrifice fly for a
3-0 lead.
Ben Kline got the Eagles within a run
with his two-run blast deep to
right-center field on a first-pitch
offering from Creath in the bottom of
the third. It was his ninth home run of
his junior season.
The Flames went ahead 4-2 in the
fourth when Justin Marrero doubled to
score Preston Scoggins, who reached on a
walk.
Embry-Riddle tied the game in the
bottom of the seventh. Following a
leadoff walk that was issued to Adam
Cellini, pinch runner Jordan Romero
advanced to second on a sac bunt and on
to third with a grounder that the
shortstop threw to first for an out. A
single through the hole at short scored
Steve Sabins. Chris Page followed with a
double to deep left-center that brought
Sabins in to score to knot the game,
4-4.
Lee responded with runs in both the
eighth and ninth frames, highlighted by
Roberto Reyes' solo home run on a 1-2
count over the center-field wall for a
5-4 advantage. The Flames scored a pair
of insurance runs in the top of the
ninth on three hits and an Eagle
fielding error.
Five Flames had at least one RBI,
with Grayson and Reyes driving in a
pair, and four batters collected two
hits in the victory.
Page led Embry-Riddle with a 3-for-4
batting performance and one RBI. Kline
recorded two of the Eagles' four RBIs,
with Sabins driving in the fourth.
Leadoff man Aaron Glaum was 2-for-4 in
his final outing for Embry-Riddle.
