June 3, 2011

LEWISTON, Idaho - Concordia (Calif.) outfielder Matt Ivanoff took home three individual awards after helping the Eagles capture the program's first national baseball title in the 55th annual Avista-NAIA World Series at Harris Field on Friday.

Ivanoff, a senior from Mission Viejo, Calif., was named the Series Most Valuable Player and also won the Charles Berry Hustle Award for his effort during the Series. He also was one of 16 players chosen to the All-Tournament Team.

The 6-foot-1, 200-pound leadoff hitter went 10-of-24 at the plate during the Series for a .417 batting average. He had two doubles, two triples, scored seven runs and drove in eight.

"I can't even comprehend this right now," Ivanoff said during Concordia's post-game celebration. "It's just an amazing feeling. I knew coming in this could be my last chance to play baseball and I just wanted to give it my all."

The top three finishers in the tournament - Concordia, Lubbock Christian (Texas) and Lee (Tenn.) dominated the All-Tournament Team, which was selected by the Series Games Committee, NAIA officials and the media covering the event. Lee, which finished third in the tournament, had six players selected to the team, while Concordia and Lubbock Christian had five each.

Manny Estrada, a sophomore shortstop for LSU-Shreveport (La.), was named the Tournament's Gold Glove winner. He had the most assists on putouts in the tournament without making an error at 19.

Joining Ivanoff from Concordia on the All-Tournament Team were second baseman Robbie Knowles, infielder Tyler Derby, outfielder Kyle Konicek, and pitcher Josh Wright.

For Lubbock Christian, catcher Nate Person, third baseman David Cruz, outfielder Austin Stewart, pitcher Lucas Whitmore, and pitcher Tyler Curtis were chosen to the team.
