LEWISTON, Idaho - (Box
Score)
Brandon Bargas tossed a four-hitter and
struck out 18, while Colin Campbell's
RBI single scored the eventual
game-winning run in the bottom of the
eighth inning to help ninth seed Rogers
State (Okla.) upset top seed LSU
Shreveport (La.) 2-1 in the second round
of the Avista-NAIA World Series at
Harris Field on Saturday night.
Rogers State, 47-14, advanced to play
No. 4 seed Tennessee-Wesleyan in the
winner's bracket on Monday at 3 p.m. LSU
Shreveport, 51-5 and the top-ranked team
in the NAIA, falls into loser's bracket
play and will meet sixth-seed and host
Lewis-Clark State at noon on Monday.
Bargas, a 5-foot-9 junior left-hander
from Owasso, Okla., fell one strikeout
short of tying a Series record of 19
strikeouts in a nine-inning game, set by
Larry Crayton of East Carolina in 1961
and tied a year later by Mark Dilley of
Winona State (Minn.). His strikeout
total, however, smashed the previous
Rogers State program record of 11.
Bargas and LSU Shreveport's Jared
Moretensen were locked in pitcher's duel
throughout the contest before the Rogers
State bats came to life. Moretensen had
a two-hitter entering the seventh, but
Rogers State collected two hits and tied
the game with a run, and then followed
up with four hits in the eighth inning,
including Campbell's key RBI single.
Bargas improved to 7-3 overall. He
allowed one walk and the lone run he
gave up was a third-inning solo home run
by LSU Shreveport's Brandon Cooksey.
Mortensen allowed the eight hits and
two runs in 7.1 innings. He struck out
five and walked one to fall to 11-2 on
the season.
Rogers State tied the game in the
seventh, although Mortensen retired the
first two hitters in the inning. Cody
Campbell started the rally with a walk
and went to second on a single by Randy
Ramirez. Cade McKewon followed with an
RBI single to left field.
In the eighth, Bargas appeared to help
himself with a double but Eric Barker
followed with a ground ball to short
that hit Bargas for an automatic out and
a single for Baker. Hector Rivera
followed with a single to move Baker to
second and Campbell followed with his
RBI single to left. Campbell was the
only player in the game to collect two
hits.
