LEWISTON, Idaho - (Box Score) No. 7 Point Park (Pa.) eliminated No.
8 South Carolina Beaufort from the 2012
Avista-NAIA World Series with a 12-8
victory at Harris Field on Monday. With
the win, the Pioneers improve to 53-10
and will face the loser of No. 9 Rogers
State (Okla.) and No. 4 Tennessee
Wesleyan at 12 p.m. PDT on Tuesday. The
Sand Sharks exit Lewiston with a 41-19
record - 1-2 in tournament play.
Derek Peluso (10-1) earned the win for
Point Park despite allowing seven runs
on 10 hits over five innings. He also
walked one and struck out one. Peluso
was relieved by Horacio Acosta, who
surrendered one run and failed to record
an out. However, closer Mike Tullio shut
the door on the Sand Shark comeback,
scattering three hits while striking out
two in four innings. Tullio was credited
with his 15th save this season.
Offensively, third baseman Lee Bodnar
was 3-for-5 for Point Park with three
runs scored and two RBIs. Other
multi-hit performances for the Pioneers
included a 2-for-4 effort by designated
hitter Ossie Alfonzo. Alfonzo also
recorded a game-high three RBIs. Don
McDuffee also had two hits.
Both teams exchanged runs in the first
inning. However, Point Park blew the
contest open in the bottom of the third
with nine runs on five hits to make it
10-1 in favor of the Pioneers. Point
Park scored three runs before the first
out was recorded on RBI singles by
Alfonzo and Steve Dujka. Alfonzo came
through for a second time in the inning
with the score already 6-1 when he
followed a Bodnar two-RBI double with
his second RBI single to close the
nine-run frame.
South Carolina Beaufort being chipping
away at the Pioneer lead in the ensuing
inning, cutting the deficit to 10-3. The
Sand Sharks posted three-straight
one-out hits, including a double to deep
center field by Brandon Collins that
scored Gabe Torres and Conald Mansfield.
Similarly to the first, both sides
conceded runs in the fifth to make it an
11-4 lead for Point Park. Although,
South Carolina Beaufort would not lay
over, opening the inning with
three-consecutive hits, including a pair
of doubles by Torres and Dom Hayes.
Hayes' double scored Torres. Collins,
who reached earlier on a single and
advanced to third on Hayes' double
scored on a wild pitch to make it 11-6.
South Carolina Beaufort added two more
to pull within three, 11-8, with three
innings left.
However, that would prove as close as
the Sand Sharks would come. Point Park
added an insurance run in the bottom of
the eighth when Tom Pasinski scored on a
Dillon Sauers sacrifice fly.
Miles Gavin (6-1) received the loss
for South Carolina Beaufort. He allowed
seven runs (four earned) in just two
innings. Torres paced the Sand Shark
bats, going 3-for-5 from the plate. He
also recorded two runs.
