The Road To THE SERIES

Part 2 of 3

There will be at least one baseball team making its first national championship tournament appearance and there could be as many as six newcomers when the 49th annual Avista NAIA World Series at Lewiston’s Harris Field kicks off May 27.

Seven of the 14 teams participating in this week’s Super Regional Tournaments have never been to the World Series and two, Dakota State (S.D.) and Briar Cliff (Iowa), meet for the Plains Super Regional title.

All Super Regionals are the best-of-3 series and the seven winners join host Lewis-Clark State College in the 10-team field. The final two teams are at-large teams and they will be the two highest ranked teams among the seven Super Regional losers. The final NAIA poll will be released Wednesday.

Among the other teams vying for their first Series berth are British Columbia, Benedictine (Kan.), Aquinas (Mich.), Fisher (Mass.) and Lee (Tenn.).

Defending champion Cumberland (Tenn) and Oklahoma City, which has finished second in each of the last three years, both won regional titles despite not being the top seeds.
