NAIA World Series Banquet Former Major Leaguer Tim Belcher to Be inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame May 12th, 2004 LEWISTON, Idaho – The NAIA World Series is pleased to announce the featured speaker for this year’s banquet is former major league baseball player Tim Belcher. Belcher, who played his collegiate career at Mount Vernon Nazarene College, will be inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame as part of the banquet ceremonies. In 1983, during Tim’s junior year at Mount Vernon, he threw a no hitter against Kenyon College while striking out 18 batters in the win. The Sporting News tabbed Belcher as the best collegiate pitcher in baseball that year, and was later drafted that summer by the Minnesota Twins as the first overall pick in the Amateur draft. Tim spent 4 years in the minor league farm system before making his major league debut in the fall of 1987 with the Los Angeles Dodgers. During the 1988 season, he was instrumental in bringing the Dodgers a world Championship, going 12-6 and finishing with an ERA of 2.91. For his accomplishments, Tim was named National League Rookie of the year by Baseball America. The following season he set career highs with 200 strikeouts, 10 complete games, and 8 shutouts while going 15-12 with an ERA of 2.82. In 1990, Tim pitched a one-hitter vs. Pittsburgh, and the following year set a career ERA best of 2.62. Following his five years with LA, Belcher played for the Reds, White Sox, Tigers, Mariners, Royals and Angels. Tim played 14 years in the Major Leagues before retiring in 2000. His career numbers include 146 wins, 18 shutouts, 1519 strikeouts, with an ERA of 4.16. The 2004 Avista NAIA World Series Dinner Banquet will be held May 27th at 7:30 p.m. at the Lewiston Elks Lodge.
