first baseman Donnie Burkhalter was a triple crown winner Thursday
at the 48th annual Avista NAIA World Series at Lewis-Clark State
Colleges Harris Field. Shortly after helping the Bulldogs win their first NAIA national championship baseball trophy with a 10-3 win over Oklahoma City, Burkhalter was named the winner of three individual Series awards. Burkhalter, who hit .350 in five Series games, was a unanimous selected to the all-tournament team at first base and also earned the MVP award for finishing with a team-high eight RBI on a Cumberland team that scored 58 runs in the tournament, 15 more than other team. Burkhalter also was named the winner of the Charles Berry Hustle Award for his hustle throughout the tournament. The 6-foot-4, 250-pound senior finished with seven hits, including two doubles, a triple and a home run. Oklahoma City shortstop Denver Kitch took home the Golden Glove award for fielding. The slick fielding senior finished with only one error in the tournament. Pitchers Carlos Fisher of Lewis-Clark State and Josh Underhill of Cumberland joined Burkhalter as the only unanimous selections to the all-tournament team. NAIA officials, tournament officials and the media covering the Series voted on the all-tournament team. Cumberland placed six players on the 15-member team, followed by Oklahoma City with three.
