5 Tips for Searching LCMail
|
warrior at: 11/12/2010 | |
Use these tips to search through your email at either Gmail or LCMail.
Who? The most important search term most likely has something to do with who you sent an e-mail to, or who sent the message to you. By typing a word that you’re looking for and then amending the search with from: or to: you can narrow your search to specific people. For example, searching for e-mails about robots from John you could type:
robots from:John
Where? One of my favorite advanced search features is the ability to snoop through different folders within your in-box. You can search just your in-box, trash or even your spam folder, if you’re so inclined. The way you do this is to type your search term and then add the words in: followed by the folder you hope to search. A simple example is searching for an e-mail about Viagra in your spam folder:
Viagra in:spam
What? Another useful way to cull your in-box is being able to search for e-mails specifically with attachments. To do this, you can simply type a sender’s name and add has:attachment to the end of the search.
from:nick has:attachment
If you know the name of the attachment, you can search for that too:
filename:robots.txt
When? Time is always of the essence with e-mails, and searching for them with dates can be incredibly useful. To do this in Gmail, you can simply add the words after: or before: followed by the date you want to search:
Jack's Birthday after:2010/05/01

Important Information about Google Buzz Class Action Settlement
|
warrior at: 11/2/2010 | |
Google rarely contacts Gmail users via email, but we are making an exception to let you know that we've reached a settlement in a lawsuit regarding Google Buzz (http://buzz.google.com), a service we launched within Gmail in February of this year.
Shortly after its launch, we heard from a number of people who were concerned about privacy. In addition, we were sued by a group of Buzz users and recently reached a settlement in this case.
The settlement acknowledges that we quickly changed the service to address users' concerns. In addition, Google has committed $8.5 million to an independent fund, most of which will support organizations promoting privacy education and policy on the web. We will also do more to educate people about privacy controls specific to Buzz. The more people know about privacy online, the better their online experience will be.
Just to be clear, this is not a settlement in which people who use Gmail can file to receive compensation. Everyone in the U.S. who uses Gmail is included in the settlement, unless you personally decide to opt out before December 6, 2010. The Court will consider final approval of the agreement on January 31, 2011. This email is a summary of the settlement, and more detailed information and instructions approved by the court, including instructions about how to opt out, object, or comment, are available at http://www.BuzzClassAction.com.

Combating Illegal File Sharing

Combating Illegal File Sharing
Lewis-Clark
State
College
(updated Fall 2010)
I. In compliance with the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) of 2008, Lewis-Clark State College hereby articulates its plan to combat illegal file sharing via its technological infrastructure.
II. In 2005, Lewis-Clark State College implemented “Bluecoat Packet Shaper” to permit the college’s IT personnel to manage specific protocols utilized in peer-to-peer file sharing.
III. IT personnel receive alerts from “Bluecoat Packet Shaper” that indicate which college computers are attempting access to peer-to-peer networks. The bandwidth has been limited to 1kb of usage for the peer-to-peer networks. This deterrent virtually makes it impossible to utilize the peer-to-peer networks and has resulted in users contacting IT.
IV. When contact by an end-user has been made regarding the limited capacity of peer-to-peer file sharing networks, IT personnel advises the individuals of the college, state, and federal laws associated with illegal file sharing.
V. Students are apprised of the college’s polices concerning illegal file sharing (and other inappropriate uses of technology) during a required new student orientation program. The policies are also published in the annual Student Handbook (http://www.lcsc.edu/osl/Current%20Std%20Hdbk%20Conduct%20Code.pdf) and are posted on the college’s web site.
VI. “Bluecoat Packet Shaper” permits specific usage on legal alternatives to peer-to-peer file sharing. The legal alternative provided to Lewis-Clark State College technology user is “I-tunes” and “Amazon.” This information is shared routinely on student news boards via the student e-mail system and in some college classrooms.
VII. Statements about criminal and civil liabilities, both state and federal, associated with illegal file sharing are communicated to students in the annual Student Handbook, during in-class presentations by IT personnel, during phone and e-mail consultations with IT personnel, and during the new student orientation program.
VIII. This plan and its associated policies are reviewed annually by the Dean of Student Services and the Associate Director of Network and Digital Security.
IX. Cases involving illegal file sharing are subject to disciplinary action under the Student Code of Conduct.

SHIP - What you should know?

SHIP – Student Health Insurance Plan
Since the fall of 2003, full-time/full-fee paying students who attend four year college/universities in the State of Idaho have been required to have medical coverage to comply with the State Board of Education policy. In an effort to reduce SHIP premiums and enhance the coverage, a consortium between LCSC, Idaho State University (ISU) and Boise State University (BSU) was formed. Information on the new plan and reduced premiums are now available on the SHS web page.
An email has been sent to all students who may be affected by these changes. Please check your LC Mail for this information. The e-mail included links to FAQs, the plan changes and summary. If you did not receive this email, you can review the changes to the SHIP coverage and waiver process at: www.lcsc.edu/osl/ins-health
If you have any questions regarding SHIP, please contact Student Health Services at shs@lcmail.lcsc.edu.

LCSC Converts Internet Connection to IRON
|
warrior at: 3/8/2010 | |
Lewis-Clark State College will be upgrading its connection to the Internet on March 12th. LCSC has contracted with the Idaho Regional Optical Network (IRON) for a high speed connection that will provide LCSC with direct access to research networks such as the National Lambda Rail. IRON’s goal is to create an ultra-high speed network for Idaho and its immediate neighborhood that will improve communication and research opportunities.
LCSC’s network administrators will perform the conversion to IRON on March 12th starting at 5:00 p.m. This project requires a full network outage, which may extend through the day on Saturday.
After Saturday, computers outside of the LCSC network might not be able to connect to LCSC resources for several days as the world’s domain name servers are updated with information about our new connection.
LCSC currently has a 20 megabit connection to the Internet. Connecting to IRON will provide faculty, staff, and students a 100 megabit connection for enhanced educational opportunities.
LCSC IT is asking that everyone help facilitate the conversion by turning off computers and printers when leaving campus on March 12th.
The following is information taken from IRON’s website:
Prior to establishing IRON, Idaho's research and higher education institutions worked independently to solve their individual network infrastructure needs. In addition, there was no cost-effective solution to connect secondary institutions. IRON creates a dynamic virtual environment and provides higher education institutions and research institutions with the ability to collaborate.
The Idaho Regional Optical Network, Inc. is a not-for-profit corporation formed to provide an economical high-speed optical network infrastructure for the State of Idaho. IRON's mission is to facilitate, build and operate a powerful optical infrastructure targeting Idaho's research, education, health care and government entities to enable research, teaching, learning, clinical and civil collaborations throughout the state. Moreover, IRON is Idaho's connection to research and education (R&E) networks throughout the United States and around the world.
