FAQ's HESI A2 Admission Assessment

What can I expect with the HESI A² Exam?


Reading Comprehension (50 items): Provides scenarios in order to measure reading comprehension, including identifying the main idea, finding meaning of words in context, passage comprehension, making logical inferences, etc. Recommended Time: 60 minutes

Vocabulary & General Knowledge (50 items): Tests knowledge of basic vocabulary often used in healthcare fields. Recommended Time: 50 minutes

Grammar (50 items): Assesses knowledge of basic grammar, including: parts of speech, important terms and their uses in grammar, and commonly occurring grammatical errors. Recommended Time: 50 minutes


Basic Math Skills (50 items): Focuses on math skills needed for healthcare fields including basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, household measures, and general math facts. Recommended Time: 50 minutes


Chemistry (25 items): Tests items that cover matter, chemical equations and reactions, the periodic table, atomic structure, nuclear chemistry, and chemical bonding. Recommended Time: 25 minutes

Biology (25 items): Covers biology basics, water, biological molecules, metabolism, cells, cellular respiration, and photosynthesis. Recommended Time: 25 minutes

Anatomy & Physiology (25 items): Tests general terminology and anatomical structures and systems. Recommended Time: 25 minutes 

Physics (This section is NOT included in our entrance exam.)

Learner Profile

Learning Style (14 items); Personality Profile (15 items): Students will answer questions and then recieve results with study tips based on their learning style and personality profile. These results do not affect your cumulative score. Recommended Time: 30 min

How can I prepare?

The “HESI Admission Assessment Exam Review - Fourth Edition” (Elsevier - ISBN 9780323353786) is a recommended study guide and is available for purchase at There are copies available to check-out at the LCSC Library. (The guide includes a Physics section, however we will not be testing on it.)

What if I don’t pass the HESI A² the first time or want to take it again to improve my score?

You are only permitted to test one time per application cycle. Be sure you are ready to test. 

When will I receive my score?

Upon completion of the test, your score report will be uploaded to your personal evolve account for you to access. Evolve will submit your score electronically to the NHS office. Distance testing results take approx. 72 hrs to be received by LCSC and your application will not be processed until this score is received. Scores are valid for 2 years.  Expiration may vary if testing for other institutions. Test proctors are not permitted to interpret or advise applicants regarding HESI A² results.
