Disability Awareness Handbook for Faculty

The Different Disabilities:
What are mental or psychological (disorders) disabilities?

Students with emotional, psychological, or mental impairments (individuals have different preferences for the term used) vary in the degree of their impairment.  They also vary from student to student whether or not they may need accommodations and whether their disability tends to be static or acute.  Most of the time psychological disabilities are not obvious, and students function with little or no need for accommodations.  However, if behavior becomes an issue, faculty needs to privately discuss what is appropriate and inappropriate behavior with the student and define limits.  The presence of a disability is never an excuse for disruptive behavior, even if the behavior is caused by the disability.  Students with psychological disabilities, like their peers without disabilities, must follow the Student Code of Conduct.
