Disability Awareness Handbook for Faculty

Some Recommended Accommodations for
Students With Learning Disabilities

·    Give students plenty of notice in the event that research papers are to be assigned.  Deadlines may need to be modified.

·    Do not ask a student with a learning disability to read aloud in class.

·    Write vocabulary unique to a particular course on the board during lecture.

·    Incorporate visual, aural and tactile instructional methods into classroom presentation.

·    Lectures may need to be audiotaped, a notetaker provided, or copies of your lecture outline provided to the student.

·    It may be necessary for students to audiotape classroom texts.  Students will need to register for classes early to receive each class list of required texts.  It can take up to six weeks for recording services.

·    Additional exam time may be needed and/or the provision of a scribe, a reader, or an isolated place to reduce external stimuli.

·    The student may benefit from the use of a computer with voice output, a spellchecker and/or assistive software.
