SYPHILIS

  1. Caused by corkscrew-shaped bacteria.
  2. Unless treated, can cause heart and brain damage, even death.
  3. Pregnant women can give the infection to unborn babies.

SYMPTOMS

·        First symptom is painless sore which may not be noticeable.

·        Later symptoms include rash and fever.

·        These symptoms disappear but, if untreated, the disease leads to serious damage years later.

TREATMENT

·        Treatment is with antibiotics.

·        Early treatment is important because symptoms of the infection may disappear but the disease remains in the body and progresses to the next stage of severity.

PREVENTION

·        Know your sex partner.

·        Use condoms.

·        Have regular medical exams.
