As you prepare for the upcoming
Fall 2006 semester, take a few minutes
to review and update your immunizations. Although these vaccinations are
not required to attend Lewis-Clark State College, your health is important
!!!
(Some courses of study require immunizations)
Did you know that over a dozen Vaccine-Preventable Diseases can disrupt
your college career?
Here is one example: Measles is usually a benign
childhood disease, but its complications can be serious and life
threatening. The
risk of death, while low, is greater for adults than for children. The
continuing appearance of cases in young adults underlines the need to
identify and immunize those who are unprotected. College students who did
not receive two doses of measles vaccine, the first at age 12 months and the
second after 1980, need to be revaccinated.
Did you know that college
students are at risk for Vaccine-Preventable Diseases such as Meningococcal
Meningitis and Hepatitis B?
These diseases have safe and effective
vaccines. Other well known childhood disease still creep up on college
campuses such as chicken pox and mumps.

How are vaccines effective?
Traditionally, vaccines are preparations of weakened or killed infectious
agents (bacteria, viruses) or their derivative products. Modern technology
has synthetically engineered most vaccines, increasing their safety.
Vaccines do not produce disease; rather, they stimulate an immune response:
the formation of antibodies against invading infectious agent or agents.
This process "immunization" confers protection against future infections
caused by the same agent or agents used in making the vaccine.
