President Thomas introduce Lynn Brinkmeyer, Division Chair of Music at Eastern Washington University, who is visiting campus as a participant in the Women in Higher Education Mentor Program.

President Thomas reminded the group that it is important to carry communication from Council meetings to campus constituents and to urge faculty to utilize the Intranet for messages.

President Thomas provided an update on Dean Froehlich’s absence due to illness.  President Thomas has developed a contingency plan reassigning direct reports.  Some units will report to the Provost, others to the Vice President of Student Affairs and others to the Budget Officer who will report directly to President Thomas.   President Thomas will meet with the Administrative Services directors on Friday to outline the plan.

President Thomas reported on the Council of Presidents’ meeting with Governor Kempthrone.  Governor Kempthorne presented his State of the State address to the legislature Tuesday, January 7, and will present his budget address on Thursday, January 9.   The Governor listened to the presidents in November about fixed costs and will recommend support of 4.2% MCO increase for higher education for those fixed costs.  The Governor does not believe he can support an across the board salary increase.  President Thomas will be very supportive of the Governor’s proposals and will ask all campus constituencies to support his proposals as well.

Topics to be discussed at the campus meeting on Thursday, January 9, include personnel, update on strategic planning and a preview of issues to be discussed with the legislative Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee.
