Provost and Vice Presidents’ Reports

Provost Report:

The Coeur d’Alene Center will move to the Harbor Center in late spring.  The facility plan requires faculty and staff to share offices for some time. Discussion is ongoing to work out the floor plan and to develop an agreement to sell the current facility.  Although the space is limited, we have access to North Idaho College and University of Idaho classrooms.

LC representatives are also working with NICHE leadership to bring focus and cooperative activity to the institutions.  The acronym NICHE will now stand for North Idaho Cooperative for Higher Education.  NICHE will have the local operating team develop a plan to share student services by FY04 and create a common fee structure.  The team will rework job descriptions for personnel assigned to NICHE to reflect modified program needs.  The LC team also will develop plans for future growth and programming.

Administrative Services Report:

  • Coeur d’Alene Center:  Architects are completing plans for the Coeur d’Alene facility at Harbor Center.  The plans will have to be reviewed by the city and the University of Idaho. LC’s complex is one wing of the Harbor Center building.  The area was originally designed as office complex, but currently has large work rooms which will be made into offices.  Space is limited, but a plan is being developed for growth.  Recommendations are forthcoming on the technology infrastructure for telephones, video conferencing and internet access.

  • Indexing of Student Fees:  The financial vice presidents and budget officers met for continued discussion regarding indexing options.  One option is being presented to the presidents as the preferred in-concept recommendation that would index fees to peer institutions (see attached document).  This recommendation suggests our fees be relative to the average of our peer institutions (within an established range of peer fees).  The Presidents’ Council will present their recommendation to the State Board Of Education at the December Board meeting.  The recommendation is close to the Board’s current student fee policy.  The Board will have to decide if it is willing to have wide range of fees throughout state, because each institution has different peer groups.   All recommendations should be investigated thoroughly before implementation.

Student Affairs and Enrollment Management Report:

  • Pathfinder:  The current editor has resigned effective for next semester.  The Communications Board will select another editor.  The financial situation is improving with focused solicitation for advertising.

  • Volunteer Center/AmeriCorps Initiatives:  Lewis-Clark Service Corp, in addition to administering AmeriCorps for most of Idaho, has created volunteer center agreements with non-profit centers to have volunteer sites to enhance statewide collaboration and improve service learning.  An over-site advisory council will be appointed.   This will strengthen our position for grant renewal with the focus on collaboration and combining with other consortiums to improve our extended service area to the south

  • Plans are underway for the Martin Luther King Day observance and additional diversity activities throughout that week.

Direct Reporting Units

Institutional Planning, Research and Assessment Report:

  • Class Sizes:  A class size report was distributed.   94% of classes are less than 30 students.  This will be a good recruiting tool.  Smallest classes will need attention.

  • SRIs:  SRIs will begin December 2 and continue through finals week.

Professional Staff Update:  Planning for a Professional Development Day on Friday, April 25, is underway and will be in conjunction with the Classified Staff’s professional development day.  Faculty are donating time for sessions.

Classified Staff Update:  A CSO meeting is scheduled for December 3.

Meeting Adjourned

The next President's Council will be on Wednesday, December 18, at 9:00 a.m., in the Alumni Board Room.
