President's Council Meeting Summary

Calendars for November, December, January and February were distributed noting President’s travel and major campus events.   

 

President’s Report

 

President Thomas attended the inauguration celebration for Rita Morris at Shawnee State University on October 31.

 

The Presidents’ Council met in Boise on November 4.  The Governor and staff are still suggesting a flat-line budget, which technically is a reduction.  However, Governor Kempthorne commented that they would have to look at inflationary increases.   ICHEF representatives met with Governor Kempthorne on Monday.  Kathie Wilcox noted discussion topics included sales tax exemptions and extending the sales tax increase.  The governor recognizes the third year without a salary increase is a stretch.  On Tuesday, Governor Kempthorne commented to the presidents that ICHEF seemed aware of economic issues, were a reasonable group, brought awareness to the issues and a practical orientation to the meeting.      

 

The State Board of Education held a teleconference on November 4 to discuss several proposed rule changes.  All rules were approved.

Article distributed:  November 2003 Kipplinger article:  Best Values in Public Colleges.  LCSC’s total in-state cost is $7,462.  The lowest on the report is $7,153, most are double the LCSC cost.

 

Provost and Vice Presidents’ Reports

 

Provost: 

 

·        The next CAAP meeting is scheduled on November 10 at Boise State University.  Jerry Hindberg also will attend to participate in discussion of telecommunications visions.

 

·        Jerry Gee, North Idaho College, will visit with the LCSC registrar to discuss cross listing of courses.  Divisions are submitting courses believe to be appropriate for cross-listing.  Discussion regarding cross-listing of courses will take place with the faculty senate soon.   LCSC’s relationship with NIC is growing stronger.

 

·        Kathy Martin and Provost Fernandez met with business representatives on Thursday, October 23, about potential classroom space in the Post Falls community.  Post Falls welcomes LCSC as a business partner.  No commitments or agreements have been finalized. 

 

·        Jerry Gee, Brian Pitcher and Tony Fernandez will met to discuss combined outreach efforts in Coeur d’Alene.  The Coeur d’Alene Oversight Council will meet on December 2.

 

·        The Clearwater Valley Outreach Center open house was on October 29.  Approximately 30 guests attended. 

 

·        Thinking through Lunch was scheduled on October 31.  Dawn Byers and Mathew Johnson discussed their experience at the US Census demographic workshop recently held in Boise.  The workshop’s primary focus was how to utilize the census web site and data.

 

·        The Center for Arts & History will host a reception to open the 2003 Idaho Commission on the Arts Visual Arts Fellowship Exhibit on Friday at 5-7 p.m.  The reception is open to the public and is sponsored by Zions Bank.  The exhibition will include the work of six Visual Arts Fellowship recipients and three honorable mention winners. All nine will have their work on display at the Center.

Administrative Services: 

        The Exel Communications changeover is being scheduled.  It is anticipated that the fiber installation will take approximately seven working days.  Christmas break is preferred.  Jerry Hindberg will follow-up with the Faculty Senate, division chairs and DATEC.  LCSC has also requested more IP addresses.

 

Student Affairs: 

Steve Bussolini and Kathy Grussing are currently on recruiting trip to Asia, meeting with the most productive agencies that produce/ recruit international students. 

 

Direct Reporting Units

 

Athletic Department:  LCSC will host the Frontier Conference Volleyball Tournament on November 20-22.

 

Institutional Planning, Research and Assessment:  Title IX Equity in Athletics report for 2002-2003 has been submitted.  Even with the elimination of Rodeo, LC was within the 1% target of scholarship to participation. 

 

College Communications Coordinator:  The student newspaper, Pathfinder, published the announcement that President Thomas does not intend to apply for the presidency at the University of Idaho.  Press release was sent to the local media. The story promotes the college in a positive manner.

 

Other Reports

 

Faculty Senate:  

·        ICHEF will focus on planning for how to approach legislature.   

·        The Budget Liaison Committee will meet Tuesday.  The meeting will be a faculty working group focusing on salary distribution recommendations for next year.

·        Sick Leave policy:  The Faculty Senate is discussing more uniformity in divisions in application of the sick leave policy.   Faculty must report sick leave.  

 

PSO:  The next PSO meeting is scheduled for November 12, at 10:30, in SUB 143.
