Psychology Major

Psychology is a social science discipline involved in the scientific study of the mind and behavior. Psychologists, using the scientific method, discover and create knowledge about human beings as well as help better the human condition through psychological services. Psychologists pursue their research and human services in clinics, hospitals, schools, colleges, universities, businesses, and military and government agencies as well as a variety of other health and social services organizations.

The set of required courses in the Psychology major is congruent with guidelines of the American Psychological Association. While most sub-disciplines in the field of psychology are included in the program of study, developmental psychology, social psychology, and counseling/clinical psychology receive particular emphasis as bases for graduate study.

The psychology major is designed for the student who plans to pursue graduate study, or who seeks a career in human/community services or chemical dependency counseling. Required courses are congruent with guidelines of the American Psychological Association and most sub-disciplines in the field are included in the program of study. Developmental psychology, social psychology and counseling/clinical psychology receive particular emphasis as bases for graduate study.

A unique feature of LCSC's psychology major is its emphasis on research skills. Our majors complete an integrated sequence of coursework on research methods, which prepares them to design, conduct, and present the findings of their own studies. Students work closely with faculty on research. Over 85% complete research studies that result in presentations at regional, national, or international psychological conferences, and/or publication in psychological journals. Over the last five years nearly three dozen students have co-authored papers or posters that were presented at the convention of the American Psychological Association.

Being a Psychology Graduate of LCSC

Psychology majors find employment with community agencies, local, state and federal government agencies, private industry, research organizations, and within human service settings, such as clinics and hospitals. In addition, a psychology degree is a strong preparation for graduate school and advanced training in psychology and many other helping professions including health and medicine, law enforcement, personnel, and social work. Internationally, interest in psychology as a science is growing rapidly in third world nations, and the offerings of psychological services, in many nations, are growing.

Our graduates' strong research skills have proven valuable in seeking employment and acceptance into competitive graduate schools. Our graduates have been accepted to a wide range of graduate schools including Arizona State University, Columbia University, University of Washington, University of Idaho, Gonzaga University, Pepperdine University and University of Texas.
