 LCSC Safety Committee

SAFETY COMMITTEE ACTION LOG

Safety concern:  With the recent snow storm in January 2012, the sidewalks from behind SGC and the SUB to the Activity Center were icy, and the other side walks on campus did not appear to be well maintained.

Action taken by Safety Committe:  Due to the snow storm of January 2012, administration officials closed campus for one and a half days.  The Physical Plant remainined on campus during the closure to the remove snow and ice off campus sidewalks, stairs and roads.

Result:  When the campus was reopened the sidewalks were clear of snow and ice.

Safety Concern:     It was reported that there are three areas on campus that are too dark at night. Talkington Hall and IPO/Kinder College building on the side towards 4th Street and the SAC Hall parking lots. The walk-way between Dok’s and the Administration building is especially dark at night by the fountain.  The west side of campus toward the parking lots is also very dark.

Action taken by Safety Committee: Barbara Pierce of Security is having a lighting assessment done on all three of these areas. The area west of campus toward the parking lots was determined to have a street light out.  That light has been replaced.  The other two areas will continue to be a discussion topic with the Safety Committee.

Result: The darkness along the above listed areas has been corrected, by replacing lights, and it well lit now.

Safety Concern: It has been reported that people are driving too fast through the 4th Street parking lot.

Action taken by Safety Committee: The committee is aware of this on-going problem and has installed stop signs.  Two more stops signs will be added to reduce speed through this area.

Result:  All the stop signs have been installed.  This issue will continue to be monitored for improvement.

Safety Concern: It was reported that Student Activities do not have a satellite phone for their overnight camping trips.

Action taken by Safety Committee:  The satellite phone has been requested in the FY12 Unit Action Plan. The committee will check early next semester to see if that was successfull.

Result: Student Activities did not receive the satellite phone asked for in the Unit Action Plan this year.
