SAFETY COMMITTEE ACTION
LOG
Safety Concern: The concern
is that there are several trees on campus are dead or very fragile and this can
cause a very bad situation. They are a hazard and should be removed and
treated.
Action taken by Safety Committee: This matter
is currently being reviewed and is under discussion by the committee. (9/2009)
Result: It was explained
that several trees this summer have been trimmed and are currently being worked
on. It is a current ongoing project with the Physical Plant and it will
continue as a discussion topic with the Safety Committee.
Safety Concern: What is the evacuation plan for the
buildings and is it posted on all exits?
Action taken by Safety Committee: A committee member
contacted IPRA and asked for the location of the evacuation plans for the
buildings and asked if the evacuation diagrams are posted on all exits.
Result: The evacuation plans for all buildings are
located on the Intranet under Emergency Response in the grey tool box. The
evacuation plans are APPENDIX C of the LCSC Emergency Response Plan. The
Emergency Response Plan and the building evacuation plans for every building are
available to all employees that have access to the Intranet. In addition every
building has a Building Evacuation Coordinator that shall update the building
evacuation plans and arrange a drill with Security at least once a year.
The Lewiston Fire Department was contacted to see if LCSC
was in compliance with Code regarding evacuation postings. It was determined
that the illuminated/battery back-up red exit signs are sufficient. There is not
a code at this time that states we need to have a detailed floor plan diagram
to point to exits. The illuminated/battery back-up red exit signs that are
visible from the exit points of classrooms and offices are enough.
Safety Concern: The stairs on the south end of the
Fine Arts Building are very slippery when went.
Action taken by Safety Committee: Physical Plant
was notified of the stairs and the Safety Committee recommended that the stairs
have some sort of non-stick strips be applied to the stairs.
Result: The Physical Plant applied non-stick
strips to the stairs in the Fine Arts Building.
Safety Concern: The concern was that service
vehicles and private vehicles using the fire lanes (pedestrian walking zones).
The drivers tend to drive at speeds that are far to fast for pedestrian zones.
The private vehicle seem to use these lanes at there leisure. The request is to
have speed limits be posted and enforced and perhaps add signage that says,
"Authorized vehicles only beyond this point." It was also requested that the use
of these lanes be reduced to service vehicles only and those private vehicles
that truly need to use these lanes be issued passes.
Action taken by Safety Committee: At present
security does not have the power to ticket for excessive speed. The issue of
private cars was also discussed and apparently many of these are custodial staff
who have to carry supplies between buildings and coming on and off shifts. The
committee discussed placing notices in the Pathfinder as a reminder to people
that driving on campus is limited to those with good reason and should always be
conducted with the pedestrian in mind.
Result: The committee will be monitoring the
situation and reminding all people on campus to drive carefully.
