Books, Books and more Books for Africa
by Christen Best
Every semester, on campuses across the country, thousands upon thousands
of good books are thrown in dumpsters. Even more books sit in closets
and boxes, collecting dust for years. At the same time, the book famine
in Africa is a reality. It is common to see five or six school children
sharing ONE book. In 2006, LCSC CKI Club tried to change that. They
decided to participate in a program spearheaded by Better World Books
called “Books for Africa.”
Near the end of the semester, posters were created and over 100 were
pasted on billboards and walls around campus. A similar ad was placed in
the campus newspaper and Circle K members talked to their friends.
During LCSC book-buy-back, Circle K members sat at a table outside the
bookstore, waiting to see what kind of a response they would get.
And boy, were they surprised. Expecting 20 or 30 textbooks from students
who couldn’t sell their texts back, they were duly impressed when at the
end of the second day, they had 2 boxes so full of books they couldn’t
carry them. And these weren’t just book boxes. LCSC students had donated
enough books to fill 2 boxes roughly 3’ x 3’ x 4’! After 4 days, the end
response was amazing. Hundreds more books had been donated and Circle K
had run out of boxes to mail them off in.
Now, almost 2 years later, countless books have been collected and over
200 boxes have been shipped. Help us continue to support these programs
and improve the lives of the people and children of Africa.
