This is a Lewis-Clark State College course offered for currently active teachers throughout Idaho and is attached to the 9th Annual Lewis & Clark Symposium held on the campus of LCSC June 21 & 22, 2007.  This is a course specifically designed to extend the experience and practical application of new learning connected, but not limited to: state social studies standards; current research related to innovative classroom instruction; diverse learners in the classroom; personal discovery and exploration; lesson design and development.  Students will be given the opportunity to earn one or two credits.

COURSE GOALS:

  1. Assist students in exploring and understanding state social studies standards and their application to course/lesson development.
     
  1. Facilitate the development of classroom strategies intended to reflect state standards and integrate Lewis & Clark Symposium information and material.
     
  1. Provide students with an opportunity to learn about and reflect upon diverse learners in their classroom and how best to incorporate such diversity into their teaching plans and lesson development.
     
  1. Provide a structure for students to capture and synthesize the experiences gained through participating in the Lewis & Clark Symposium through reflective journaling and additional projects.


COURSE OBJECTIVES:
To satisfactorily complete this course and earn the credits, students will:

  1. Engage in meaningful self analysis and discovery through the continual process of journaling and self dialogue.  The journal will reflect both written and visual entries capturing the essence of new learning and self discovery.
     
  1. Critically explore a variety of issues and challenges experienced by the peoples associated with the Lewis & Clark symposium - from Lewis and Clark to the Nez Perce Nation - to purposefully examine and design a learning experience for their students.
     
  1. Design and produce a Mapping Module / Lesson Plan(s) / Power Point Presentation to reflect their experiences and to assist in instructional design for their own classroom.
     
  1. Research and explore current writing on relevant topics of interest and complete a project associated with the research.

COURSE PROJECTS & CREDIT OPTIONS:

 
Mandatory Personal Reflective Journal (will be supplied)
 
  • 1 Credit Option (mandatory journal) +
    PowerPoint Presentation
    Specific to Lewis & Clark Symposium Theme and must contain a minimum of 15 slides for acceptance; PPP will be submitted via CD or email.
    OR
    One lesson plan specific to Lewis & Clark Theme
    Lesson plan format will be provided.  This lesson plan will be archived on the LCSYM L&C Lesson Plan Website for use by all Idaho teachers and must be original and of high quality; Submission via CD or email (word format)

  •  2 Credit Option (mandatory journal) +
    PowerPoint Presentation
    Specific to Lewis & Clark Symposium Theme and must contain a minimum of 30 slides for acceptance; PPP will be submitted on CD.
    AND
    Two lesson plans specific to Lewis & Clark Theme
    Lesson plan format will be provided.  This lesson plan will be archived on the LCSYM L&C Lesson Plan Website for use by all Idaho teachers and must be original and of high quality; Submission via CD or email (word format)
