Warriors take fifth at Nationals

Three time zones, three days of competition, three different opponents and some dramatic climatic condition changes (heat and humidity), welcome to Southwest Florida and the Wilson/ITA National Small College Tennis Championships hosted by Florida Gulf Coast University in Fort Myers from October 13-16th. Eight regional winners (in singles and doubles) converged to battle for top individual national honors.

The Warriors found some solace in Punta Gorda, home to Batna, Baska, Ganbayar and Jerry. These are relatives of Khaliun (Helen) who graciously opened their home to the Warriors during their stay in Florida. Khaliun was reunited with her relatives after a lapse of three years. "Their hospitality certainly made the trip more enjoyable and comfortable. It was nice to have a place to call our home away from Lewiston. We were treated to Mongolian food and Brazilian food. On top of that, we got another family interested in tennis as that was their first time attending a tennis event and liked it".

The tandem of Maria Resende and Khaliun Enkhjargal picked up a fifth place finish in doubles. The Warriors lost its opening match against Indiana Wesleyan University but rebounded to win its last two against Georgetown College, Kentucky and William Jewell College, Missouri.

In singles, Maria Resende dropped her first two matches - against Auburn University of Montogomery, and Indiana Wesleyan University before defeating Lindenwood University, Missouri to earn the seventh place finishing.

"The time change was brutal. There was a day when the wake up call was for 530am Florida time (230am Lewiston time) to travel for a 8am start (5am Lewiston time). But the players handled the conditions rather well".

Maria Resende is a junior from Brazil and Khaliun Enkhjargal is a senior from Mongolia.

"Both players ended the trip with a win. They have gotten a better idea of what it would take to get to the next level. The experience gained from this trip is priceless".
