The Warriors swept the singles and doubles titles in the 3rd
Annual PNW Small College Championships hosted by Whitman College. Dermot O'Grady, the two
time defending champion and first seed had to settle for a second place finish this year
to All-American teammate Vinicius Vieira. Vinnie played a remarkable two set match,
hitting quality shots from the baseline to keep Dermot at bay. "It felt like I was
playing against a pro. He was blasting winners left and right"
The doubles final featured the top pairs from LC
and Whitman. Vinnie and Dermot captured the crown with an 8 game pro set win over Tim
Mullin and hard serving Trevor Gamble, a transfer from UC Santa Cruz (a perennial Division
III national title contender). This victory marks the third straight doubles title for
Dermot, who has now won the event with three different partners. Dermot and Vinnie are
seeded one in the ITA Regionals which begin on Saturday in the LCSC Tennis Center and the
Lewiston High School courts.
This could be a preview to what may be an exciting final encounter in the ITA
Regionals scheduled for September 29-October 1.
Dermot is the defending champion and he leads the series 2-1 against Vinnie in
tournament play. Both players are seeded 1 and 2 (in the regional singles), but the the
draw has attracted many strong players who are out to spoil their potential match up.
