HISTORY OF LCSC TRACK & FIELD

Lewis-Clark State College had a track and field team for a four to five year span in the late 1960's.  At this time it was a men's only program.  As you can see, most of the records are still in place from this era.  It is still unknown who the coach was at the time, but many of the athletes that participated on these teams are still in the area including Wade Hillman, Recently retired head Track coach at Lewiston High and Steve Rice, local attorney.

The program was revived in 1998 by coaches Mike & Tracy Collins.  Primarily to give runners that were being recruited to run cross country an opportunity to run outdoor track and field in the spring.  Because of the administrative setup of the program, at that time it was totally self-sufficient from a financial standpoint.  Because of this, student-athletes were not specifically recruited for track and field, however, no one was turned away that desired to compete.  Those athletes that participated in the program did additional fundraising to help offset the cost of having a program.

Starting in the academic year of 2007-08 LCSC will have its first funded track and field program.  This will include an indoor and outdoor season.  The funding will go towards costs of travel, food, entry fees and other overhead.  This will be the first stage in a multi-stage model where a program involving all disciplines in track and field will be represented and scholarship will be available to those deserving of this type of incentive.

With the restart of the program in 1998 there was added a women's team.  This has opened some doors of opportunity for female participation and competition, as well as the fact that there are a lot of records were set while the program was still in its infancy.

Since the inception of the program at least one track athlete has qualified for the national championships and the program has already surpassed eleven All-Americans and one NATIONAL CHAMPION.

As can be expected due to the cross country influence in the program, most of the athletes compete in middle to long distance races.  However, more and more interest is being seen in the sprints as well as the field events.

An opportunity awaits at LCSC in the cross country and track programs as we are the only public institution of this competition level in the state (NAIA).  Outside of competing at a Division I program, where an individual may not get many competitive opportunities due to limited traveling squads and often gets lost in the crowd, or competing at the JC ranks where competition can be great, but can be an academic and athletic hindrance later, LCSC offers a competitive environment where everyone can compete (AND TRAVEL) at their own level, get one-on-one coaching time, and have a good time while attending a 4-year institution.
