FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

QUESTION 1:  What does the CNA class teach me?

CNAs work under the supervision of a nurse and provide assistance to patients with daily living tasks.  As a CNA, you are responsible for basic care services such as bathing, transferring, grooming and feeding patients, assisting nurses with medical equipment, and checking patient vital signs.  You will give patients important social and emotional support and also provide vital information on patient conditions to nurses.

QUESTION 2:  What does the online/on-campus CNA class require in terms of time and on-campus time?

You will complete all of your didactic training on-line through LCSCs Blackboard system, thus you must have access to the internet to take this course.  Your instructor will set deadlines for work to be completed via the course calendar.  You will meet with your instructor for 7 sessions, each 4 hours long to learn and practice your skills.

QUESTION 3:  How long will it take me to complete my CNA class?

The class is 12 weeks long.  This does not include your state skill and written exams.

QUESTION 4:  How long do I need to wait after the class to begin state testing?

At the end of the class, the instructor will turn in a final roster indicating who has passed the course.  Once this information is received by LCSC Workforce Training, the student may register to take the skill exam.  You register for the skill exam at Workforce Training (208-792-2388). The skill exam must be passed prior to taking the written exam.  You have six months after course completion to pass your skill exam.  You will be allowed three attempts to pass your skill exam.  After you have passed the skill exam, you then qualify to take the written exam at the Center for New Directions (208-792-2331).  You have three attempts to pass the written exam also.  You must pass the written exam within 12 months of course completion.

QUESTION 5:  I have let my CNA certificate expire.  What do I need to do to have my certificate reinstated?

You will need to contact the Idaho State Nurse Aide Registry at 1-800-748-2480.  They will advise you on your next step.

QUESTION 6:  I have taken the CNA test in another state but didn’t pass; can I test at Workforce Training?

No.  You will need to contact the Idaho State Nurse Aide Registry at 1-800-748-2480.  They will advise you on your next step.

QUESTION 7:  I hold a CNA license in other State, can I work as an aide in Idaho?

You will need to contact the Idaho State Nurse Aide Registry at 1-800-748-2480.  They will advise you on your next step.

QUESTION 8:  How much does the class cost?  Is testing a separate cost?  If so, what is the cost?

As of January 2012 the on-campus class cost is $555 plus 2 books.  The onlin/on-campus class cost is $550 plus 1 book.  The skill exam is $50 per exam.  The written exam is also $50/exam. If you fail either of your exams, you will have to pay the fee again in order to test again.

QUESTION 9:  I am in high school; can I take the CNA training?

Yes.  You may want to check with your local high school.  Many of the high schools already have the program in place.

QUESTION 10:  I am an EMT, paramedic, or military medic.  Is that the same as a nursing assistant?

No.  You will need to take the course.  If you feel you have sufficient background knowledge, then contact the Idaho State Nurse Aide Registry at 1-800-748-2480.  They will advise you on your next step.
