One of the greatest features of Lewis-Clark State College Workforce Training is our rapid response in creation of training programs needed in the region. We serve five counties of Educational Region 2 including Nez Perce, Latah, Lewis, Idaho and Clearwater. Our mission is to provide customized and short-term training to meet the need
for entry level employees, upgrade training for existing employees and retraining of workers who have lost their jobs. One of the methods we use to fulfill this mission is collaborative efforts with other state agencies and educational institutions.
Currently, we are in partnership with North Idaho College in two grant projects, one of which is for provision of needed training for the lumber industry. This industry, as many others, is losing seasoned employees and in desperate need of trained individuals to replace them. Idaho Forest Group and Empire Lumber have teamed up with NIC and LCSC in this valuable project; we send a hearty thank-you to our industry partners for their assistance in helping us help them!
One of the trainings included in this grant is the Programmable Logic Control or PLC program. PLC’s are the mainstay technology in today’s manufacturing world. The PLC is the control center which directs automated machinery. Working with PLC’s requires specialized training and knowledge to prevent costly breakdowns and to maintain high productivity.
The grant is an Idaho Department of Labor Sector grant designed to increase employment or to increase wages for already employed individuals. The lumber industry desperately needs employees trained in PLC’s and this grant provided the means for WFT to provide it. The grant pays for our instructor for the PLC class, Jeremy Fromm the head PLC programmer at the Lewiston Idaho Forest Group, hands on trainers, and a supplementary online training program.
The training is a four part series from very introductory information leading to a more in-depth training. Previously, this training has only been available through vendors, usually at a distant location. Our ability to provide the training is a huge benefit and cost savings for the region, not only for the lumber industry but for other industries who use PLC’s.
We are currently mid-way in the grant training program, and are offering classes to the general public at the North Lewiston Training Center. Watch as we provide another fine example of how WFT responds to industry’s need for training.Register Online
