Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Can I just send you my paper and check later for your corrections?
A. No. We're not a correction service. We'll give you feedback to help you think more deeply about your writing and how you can improve it. We can only accomplish this with your active participation in the process.

Q. Can you just check my grammar?
A. If your draft has a strong focus and is well developed and organized, it may be appropriate for us to focus on grammar. Often, though, it's necessary to work on the "bigger" issues - like thesis, support, and organization - first. Still, while consultants may suggest a priority for the session, ultimately, you decide what to work on.

Q. Will I get a better grade on my paper if I use the OWL?
A. You might, but that's not our primary purpose. Our purpose is to help you learn to be a better writer. One consultation on one aspect of one assignment might not result in a higher grade, but over time, the strategies you learn to use in your writing process will improve your critical thinking and writing abilities.

Q. How long will it take to get my paper back from a peer consultant?
A. We'll do our best to send you feedback within 48 hours of receiving your essay, Monday - Friday. If it's going to take us longer, we'll try to let you know.

Q. When should I ask for feedback - at the beginning, middle, or end of a writing project?
A. We'll help you at any stage of the writing process. We can give you better help if you consult with us throughout the process, not just at the end.

Q. My paper's due in an hour. Can you help me?
A. There's not much we can do if you don't have time to revise your essay. Next time, plan to consult us several days before the essay is due.

OWL Hours

Even though the internet is available 24 hours a day, peer consultants are not. Peer consultants will respond to OWL requests during their normal Writing Center shifts, Monday - Friday. Peer hours for the Spring 2010 semester are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Friday.
