Education
Dr. Gwen Sullivan earned her Bachelor's in English/Secondary Edcucation from LCSC in 1992. She earned a Master's in English from the University of Idaho, Moscow, in 2002. In May, 2013, Sullivan earned her Ph. D. in English from Washington State University, Pullman. Her dissertation was a hybrid of local logging history focused on the Palouse and the upper Clearwater River drainage; a brief history of Pierce, Idaho; a critical examination of two memoirs by women who grew up in the Pierce area--Betty Lynch Husted's Above the Clearwater: Living on Stolen Land and Kim Barnes's In the Wilderness: Coming of Age in Unknown Country; interviews of women who have lived or continue to live in the logging community of Pierce; and her own memories of living in the town where her sons were born and where their father and paternal grandmother were born and raised.
Teaching Experience
After completing her BA in English at LCSC, Sullivan taught at Clearwater Valley High School in Kooskia, Idaho, for five years before spending two years in Nishinomiya, Hyogo, Japan, teaching in junior high schools with Japanese English teachers.
From 2002-2004, she taught English as a Second Language at Spring International Language Center at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville. She continues to teach in special programs there during the summer months.
At LCSC, Sullivan has taught College Writing, workshops connected to College Writing, Research Writing, Introduction to Literature, Teaching Composition for English Secondary Education Majors , Student Development 192 (Now Student Development 107), Senior Research, and a special topics class for Writing Center interns.
Outside the classroom, Sullivan has participated in the Idaho Writing Reform Task Force and with the Writing Program Administrators group. She is also a Dual-Credit liasison to two nearby high schools.
She also sings with the LCSC/Community Choir and serves on the Palouse Choral Society Board of Directors, Community Member.
Thoughts on Teaching at LCSC
Teaching at LCSC is the fulfillment of a desire engendered when Sullivan was a student here. The atmosphere of the college, the diversity of students, and the collegiality of faculty and staff make it an ideal workplace.
