International graduates who hold a designated STEM degree, may be eligible for a 24 month OPT Stem Extension.

Steps for OPT STEM Extension Application

Verify that you and your employer meet all eligibility requirements to apply for the OPT STEM extension.

Complete the Form I-983 Training Plan for STEM OPT Students with your employer. This must be completed before meeting with IPO staff for an updated I-20.

Submit the STEM OPT Extension Request form AND a copy of your completed I-983 Training Plan to the IPO office.

Schedule a meeting with an IPO advisor.  Your advisor will issue you a new I-20 with STEM OPT Extension recommendation.

Prepare all required materials for the USCIS OPT STEM Extension Application.

While not required, the International Programs Office highly recommends meeting with an advisor for a final review of your completed application materials.

Submit your completed application packet and fee to USCIS.  Application wait times vary.  Your employment authorization document automatically extends for a period of 180 days while the application is pending.
