Social Science

Become an expert in places, cultures and events around the world, and apply it to many different career paths.

The Social Sciences major can prepare you for careers not only in teaching but also law, politics, journalism, historical preservation, cultural resource management, or for running your own business and anything involving finding and understanding new information (research). The major’s focus on independent learning provides opportunity for you to prepare for a wide variety of leadership positions in community and business. The Social Science degree offers four areas of emphasis. You will have your choice among Anthropology, History, Political Science, or Sociology, depending on your interests and goals. Anthropology involves the cross-cultural study of human beings and their way of life through time. History can take many forms, as can Political Science. The Sociology emphasis studies how the social world operates, from the micro-level of everyday interactions in small groups such as families to the macro-level of processes in social institutions such as the economy, religion, politics, and education.

“My professors, specifically my social science professors were the best instructors I’ve ever had the chance to work with ... In a nutshell, LC State made a difference in my life, and the education, friendships and experiences have made me a better person.” - Sandra Kelly ‘14
