A new tradition begins at Lewis-Clark State College with "The Art of Giving: Send Hunger Packing" spring food drive. The food drive is organized by the LCSC Social Sciences Division and the LCSC Service Corps. Several on-campus student clubs are also involved in the effort.
On Saturday, April 20, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m., volunteers with the LC Service Corps Community Warriors Volunteer Center will go door-to-door in neighborhoods adjacent to the campus to collect non-perishable food items, baby food, toiletries, and diapers. Volunteers will visit the neighborhoods on Friday, April 19 to leave notices about the food collection taking place Saturday.
From April 22 - 25, the effort will focus on the campus. Donation boxes will be set up at various locations and donations can also be dropped off at the LC Service Corps office at 826 7th Street.
Donations will also be accepted at Art Under the Elms, which takes place on the LCSC campus April 26, 27 and 28. Anyone who brings two or more donation items will receive $2.00 off a Dogwood Festival T-shirt.
To demonstrate the Art of Giving during Art Under the Elms, the LCSC Engineering Club will be "CANstructing" a sculpture out of the donations. All donors can choose to have their name displayed in the exhibit.
Monetary donations can be dropped off at the Art of Giving booth. The LCSC PoliSci Club is organizing a fundraiser that will match any food drive monetary donations up to a total of $250.
All donations will benefit the YWCA and Community Action Partnership food banks. Food banks need help this time of year because, while many donate during the holiday season, donations fall off during spring and summer. Additionally, with the school year coming to a close for local grade school and secondary students, many of them will not be able to rely on food assistance provided by their schools.
