LEWISTON, Idaho - LCSC Center for Arts & History and LCSC Continuing Education are proud to offer a rare opportunity to participate in a three-day workshop conducted by Thomas and Michael Schumacher.
On August 6, 7, and 8, the Schumachers will share their unique approach to the discipline of improvised music and dance, focusing on a variety of tools used to develop a dynamic dialogue between movement and sound. The workshop will take place 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. in the LCSC Music Building, 7th Street and 11th Avenue. Each session begins with exercises that explore relationships between thought, movement, and sound in the immediate environment. The session continues with examples of both fixed and open structures in which the participants improvise with such elements as movement, sound, text, and light. Through practice and theory, participants explore a process by which they collectively experience spontaneously-created compositions.
Michael Schumacher is a performing artist with roots in classical and modern dance. He has been a member of several groundbreaking companies, including Ballet Frankfurt, Twyla Tharp Dance, Feld Ballet, Pretty Ugly Dance Company, and Magpie Music Dance Company. Working as dancer, choreographer, and teacher, Schumacher has developed a unique approach to the discipline of improvisation. Michael began dancing in musical theatre productions in his hometown of Lewiston, Idaho. After moving to New York, he received a B.F.A. in Dance from the Juilliard School. He currently resides in Amsterdam and conducts workshops in movement analysis and improvisation worldwide.
Thomas Schumacher is a composer, conductor, educator, and performance artist. He is frequently featured as ensemble accompanist and conductor as well as improvisational artist and solo keyboard artist. His recent performances include ‘llumine' at Orgelpark, Amsterdam and Seattle Festival of Dance Improvisation (SFDI). His training includes Music and Theater Arts at the University of Idaho, Lewis-Clark State College, and College of Southern Idaho. As educator, he teaches piano, pipe organ, vocal technique, and compositional technique at Main Street Music Studio in his hometown of Lewiston, Idaho.
This workshop is open to all teenagers and adults with a sincere interest in exploring and expanding their own creative impulses. No previous experience with music and dance improvisation is necessary. The cost of the workshop is $45.
