Lewis-Clark State College has a long tradition of preparing teachers.  Since its founding in 1890, LCSC has always been a place for people to learn to become teachers.  We are proud of our tradition as a teacher's college and our reputation throughout the Northwest for doing it well.  The college is consistently ranked near or at the top of all programs preparing teachers in the state.

Program Overview & Requirements

The undergraduate course of study for an endorsement in a secondary education content area is intended for students earning their bachelor's degrees and attending the majority of classes on the Lewiston campus.  Courses of study that lead to secondary teaching certification, grades 6-12, are as follows.   Course requirements for each course of study can be found by clicking on the name below.

There are three phases in the Secondary Education Program.

Phase I - General Education Core, Content Area Major, and Professional Foundations in Education

 COURSEWORK REQUIRED:

  • Successful completion of the LCSC General Education Core Curriculum
  • Professional Foundations coursework (required):
ED 214 - Principles of Education
ED 224 - Media & Technologies in a Digital World
ED 318 - Assessment of Learning
ED 321 - Educational Psychology

Other Key Assessments and Qualifications:

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better; 3.0 or better in content coursework
  • Grade of "C-" or better in all required Professional Foundations 200-level coursework
  • Grade of "B-" or better in all required Professional Foundations 300-level coursework
  • Proficient performance in the Phase I practicum experience
  • Application to the Teacher Education Program
  • Entrance Interview
  • Evidence of the appropriate dispositions of a teacher

Phase II - Content Area Major, Research, Instructional Methods, and Professional Studies in Education

COURSEWORK REQUIRED:

  • Successful completion of coursework of the content area major
  • Successful completion of the capstone research for the content area major

ED 345 - Culturally Relevant Teaching
SE 322 - Inclusionary Strategies
ED 424 - Media & Technologies in a Digital World
ED 445 - Instructional Strategies & Classroom Management
ED 449 - Teaching Methods in the Content Area, 6 - 12
RE 422 - Reading in the Content Area

OTHER KEY ASSESSMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better; 3.0 or better in content coursework
  • Grade of "B-" or better in all Professional Studies coursework
  • Proficient professional performances in authentic settings
  • Proficient achievement on appropriate Praxis examination(s). Go to the ETS website ets.org to find the current required exams for Idaho certification.
  • Requisite progress on the Professional Portfolio
  • Evidence of the appropriate dispositions of a teacher
  • Review of progress in Phase II objectives/requirements

Phase III - Professional Internship in Education

COURSEWORK REQUIRED:

  • Professional Studies Curriculum (required):
 ED 452 - Professional Seminar in Education, 6 - 12

ED 460 - Professional Internship in Education, 6 - 12; OR

ED 461 - Professional Internship in Education (Kines/Health), K - 12

 OTHER KEY ASSESSMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better; 3.0 in content area coursework
  • Grade of "B-" or better in all Professional Studies coursework
  • Proficient professional performances in authentic settings
  • Evidence of the appropriate dispositions of a teacher
  • Completion of the Professional Portfolio
  • Passage of the Exit Interview
  • Review of all LCSC requirements for graduation
  • Review of all Idaho requirements for certification
