Lewis-Clark State College will soon be a non-smoking campus. The College has adopted a new smoke-free "Fresh Air" policy that prohibits smoking on any College property on Normal Hill, indoors or outdoors, except in five designated parking lots located around the perimeter of the campus, along 4th Street, 6th Street, and 11th Avenue. The new policy takes effect on the first day of fall classes, Monday, August 26.
Additionally, smoking will not be permitted on College-owned or leased property located away from the main campus (e.g. Music Building, Pi'amkinwaas, North Lewiston Training Center, downtown Lewiston facilities, and outreach centers in Grangeville and Orofino). LCSC students and staff using facilities owned by North Idaho College or the University of Idaho in Coeur d’Alene or Sandpoint will comply with the host institution's (NIC or UI) smoking policies.
The new LCSC smoking restrictions are more stringent than those in current Idaho Code, which prohibit smoking inside any College-owned property or outside within 20 feet of all entrances and exits.
The new policy applies to anyone on College property, including visitors and work crews. The College reserves the right to initiate disciplinary procedures against any individual found to be in continuous violation of the policy, but stresses that all faculty, staff, and students have a collective responsibility to promote the safety and health of the campus community and therefore share in the responsibility of enforcement.
In the fall of 2012 the Associated Students of LCSC approached the administration advocating that the campus become smoke-free. LCSC President J. Anthony (Tony) Fernández solicited input from faculty and staff, and campus-wide discussions were held to gather additional input from all student and employee governance groups. A recommendation was made for the College to become a smoke-free campus and it was approved by President Fernández this past spring.
Key goals of this policy are to eliminate exposure to second-hand smoke and to provide a healthy environment for all users of the campus. The policy also addresses the objectives related to decreasing adult tobacco use in the Centers for Disease Control's "Healthy Campus 2020" initiative. The college supports employees' and students' efforts to quit smoking and offers resources for smoking cessation.
