Cash awards part of LCSC PoliSci Club Civic Engagement Essay Competition

Lewiston, Idaho - The Lewis-Clark State College PoliSci Club is sponsoring its first annual Civic Engagement Essay Competition.  The competition is open to all students age 14 - 18 who are residents of Asotin or Nez Perce County.  Cash prizes of $100, $50, and $25 will be awarded to the authors of the top three essays.  The submission deadline is December 1, 2013.  Submissions must be emailed to [email protected].

The essay question, to be answered in 1500 words or less, is:  “Given the historically low voter turnout for 18 - 24 year olds and common misunderstandings about the function of the American political system, what would you propose, realistically, to increase voter turnout and a better understanding of the U.S. system?”

The cash awards and honorable mentions will be presented during a ceremony on the LCSC campus on Friday, December 13, 2013 at 6 p.m.  The ceremony will take place in Sacajawea Hall Room 115.  The public is invited.

“The idea for the competition is twofold: a) encourage younger students to think about political issues and becoming actively engaged with their community and the political process and b) to provide another opportunity for area students to build connections with LCSC,” said Dr. Leif Hoffmann, LCSC Assistant Professor of Political Science and PoliSci Club advisor.
