Exhibit showcasing early LC Valley photos to open at Center for Arts & History

LEWISTON, Idaho – An exhibit entitled, “Stories We See: Early Photography from the Valley,” will open at the Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts & History, 415 Main Street, on Friday, Sept. 9, at 5 p.m. The three-month long photography exhibit, on display until Dec. 3, highlights the historical evolution of the art and technology of photography in the Valley from the mid-1800s to present day.

“Stories We See: Visions from the Valley” places an emphasis on the stories about photographers, their subjects, and the context in which photographs were taken throughout the past 150 years. The exhibit includes a room dedicated to the history of Lewiston Tribune photography, many artifacts that include historical cameras and photo developing equipment, and the installation of a dark room in one of the gallery vaults.

The exhibit is brought to the Center for Arts & History by sponsorship from Land Title of Nez Perce County, Visit Lewis Clark Valley, Inland 360, and partnerships with Nez Perce Historical Park, Lewiston Morning Tribune, Nez Perce County Historical Society, and Asotin County Museum.

Grant funding was attained from the Idaho Humanities Council (IHC), US Bank Foundation, Idaho Commission on the Arts, and the National Endowment for the Arts.  The exhibit received two IHC grants, the first was a research grant secured by professor Sean Cassidy of LCSC’s Humanities Division for planning and research to support the exhibit. The second was an implementation grant secured by the Center for Arts & History to pay for photography rights, printing, processing, exhibit design, and speaker honorariums.

Open Monday-Saturday from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., the gallery features free admission but donations are welcome. For more information about the exhibitions or to schedule a docent tour, visit www.lcsc.edu/cah or call 208-792-2243.
