Two exhibits open Friday at Center for Arts & History

LEWISTON, Idaho – Two exhibitions at the Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts & History will kick off on Friday, Feb. 3, with a special artist reception and openings.

The exhibits, “Brian Sostrom: The Beauty of Nothing” and “Idaho Booker’s Dozen,” will both open on Friday. A reception for Sostrom will be held at the Center, located at 415 Main Street in downtown Lewiston, starting at 5 p.m.

Sostrom’s exhibit will run through March 18, while “Idaho Booker’s Dozen” runs through Feb. 25 at the Center.

Nature and the beauty of emptiness have inspired Sostrom’s paintings. The atmospheric images are painted upon a thick translucent acrylic substrate. Glass beads and iridescent paint are often incorporated into his work and alter the appearance of the surface as the lighting and angle of view shift.

Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Sostrom graduated with a BFA from Washington State University in 1992. After college, Sostrom began working at a small magazine publisher in Seattle, where he created illustration and advertisement graphics. In 1993, he entered the video game industry and generated characters, worlds, and animations. He is an avid painter and sculptor, and has taken part in many shows throughout Oregon and Washington.

The 2016 edition of “Idaho Booker’s Dozen” is a juried show of artists’ books that travel to multiple venues across Idaho. Artists’ books are one-of-a-kind objects or small editions, as long as they are self-published by a book artist. This exhibition is put together by the Idaho Center for the Book at Boise State University.

Sostrom’s exhibit is sponsored by Dick & Kim Mitchell, while the “Idaho Booker’s Dozen” is sponsored by …and BOOKS too! Both exhibitions received grant funding from US Bank and artsIDAHO.

Open Tuesday-Saturday at 11 a.m.-4 p.m., the Center features free admission but donations are welcome. For more information about the exhibitions or to schedule a docent tour, visit www.lcsc.edu/cah or call 208-792-2243.
