LEWISTON, Idaho – Rachel Myers of Lewiston became the second straight Lewis-Clark State College student to win the Print & Graphic Scholarship Foundation’s national poster design contest, the organization announced earlier this month.
Myers’ poster “Start Your Journey” was chosen the overall winner and she will receive a $500 check and a certificate of recognition for the honor. Last year, Becca Eller of Riggins, Idaho, won the honor.
In addition, LCSC will receive five graphic design books from various graphic artists as well as a plaque honoring Myers as the winner, which will be displayed in the graphic communications office at the college.
Myers’ poster will be used by PGSF to promote scholarships awarded by the organization. The poster will be printed in 11-by-17 inch size for display in high schools and will also be used in advertisements and on web pages. Myers was required to incorporate the PGSF logo and information about the scholarship, such as how to apply and the deadline for applying. The posters’ message and tag line was left up to the designer.
Myers used her own experience to come up with the poster’s concept. Myers, 27, decided to go to college as a non-traditional student. She is originally from Weippe but moved to Lewiston about 10 years ago,
“I started thinking about how it’s never too late to go back to school,” she said. “I was a non-traditional student and always considered when I started school the beginning of a new journey. Journeys take you places you have never been and always offer new wisdom and life experience, which is what college is all about.”
Myers is starting her next journey as she earned her associate degree in graphic communications.
“Now that I have graduated I am working on gaining enough freelance work to support me full time so that my husband (David) and I can open our own design firm,” she said of her dream job. “He is a web developer and we have done many projects together. I love the idea of having a small design firm and a few employees where we do anything from logo design to websites for our clients.
“However a huge passion of mine is cooking and I always love working on cookbook designs and would love to get into that scene.”
Myers said she thrived in the graphic communications program at LCSC.
“I loved it,” she said. “I was always scared to go back to school even though I considered myself a good student. As soon as I got into the program I didn't want to leave. I miss the teachers and their constant critiquing. Someday, I would like to pursue my bachelor’s degree.
