President’s Row tree planting on April 26 will honor LCSC’s Pemberton

LEWISTON, Idaho – A tree planting ceremony to honor Lewis-Clark State College President Cynthia Pemberton as part of President’s Row will be held on Arbor Day, April 26, at 2:30 p.m. near the intersection of Seventh Avenue and Fifth Street on the LCSC campus.

The ceremony is free and open to the public.

As part of college’s 125th anniversary celebration last year, the college planted a row of new trees along Seventh Avenue to honor past, current, and future presidents of the college. The project, called President’s Row, was the legacy project for 2018 by the Associated Students of LCSC, which is comprised of elected student officers who represent the student body. Each year, ASLCSC identifies and funds a legacy project to beautify the campus.

With help from the college’s Foundation office, Arboretum Committee, Physical Plant office, and ASLCSC, President’s Row will consist of 16 trees with the addition of the Purple Robe Black Locust tree that will be planted to honor President Pemberton. President’s Row starts on Seventh Avenue, just east of the Fourth Street parking lot, and continues to the east side of the bus stop near the LCSC library.

“Because trees have deep and enduring roots, establishing resilient foundations for future growth; this legacy project not only serves to beautify our campus, but is emblematic of our strong history and forward-looking vision for ever-better tomorrows,” Pemberton said.

President’s Row consists of a variety of maple and ash trees, along with a Japanese Dogwood, a Hardy Rubber Tree, and a City Sprite Zelkova, among others. The trees included those recommended by Lewiston city officials that were suitable for Lewiston’s climate as well as being planted close to the street and sidewalk. The variety of trees chosen add color and variety to that campus area.

The plan for Presidents' Row is to continue east on Seventh Avenue with a new tree for each future president of the college.

Along with the project, the LCSC Foundation and ASLCSC are using Presidents' Row as a fundraiser for a scholarship, which will benefit a high academically achieving student who illustrates exemplary leadership experience. Anyone can contribute to President’s Row and their donation will go to the scholarship.
