Lewiston’s Douglass wins top honor at CAH’s Rivers and Vines Plein Air competition

LEWISTON, Idaho – Lewiston’s Deon Douglass painting “Riverview” (pictured above) took top honors during judging at the 6th annual Rivers and Vines Plein Air competition at the Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts & History.

Douglass won $500 for the top juried cash prize. Her painting, and others, will be on display through Aug. 31 in the main floor galleries at the Center, located at 415 Main St. In Lewiston. The exhibit features a collection of works from veteran and new plein air artists who took part in paint-outs at local vineyards and venues with water views in June.

Plein air art is the act of painting outside instead of in a studio.

Cathy Gottschalk of Deary won $300 for second place with “Off the Beaten Path,” while Joyce Tamura of Moscow won $200 for “Toward Kendrick and Juliaetta.”

Gloria Teats of Whitebird was the juror for the event.

Vista Choice awards also were selected by a site representative from each paint out and the winners received local wines and gift cards. Vista’s Choice Award partners include 2 Bad Labs Vineyard & Tammany View Winery, Arnett Vineyard, Blue Lantern Coffee House, Clearwater Canyon Cellars, Colter’s Creek, Jovinea Cellars, and Wawawai Canyon Vineyard.

The Center for Arts & History galleries are open Tuesday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free but donations are welcome. For more information about the exhibitions or to schedule a docent tour, visit www.lcsc.edu/cah or call 208-792-2447.
