LEWISTON, Idaho – Lewis-Clark State College will celebrate Women’s History Month in March with four free virtual lunch hour presentations on March 1-4.
This year’s theme is “Making History During the Unknown: Women’s Lives During Times of Change.” Event organizer Amy Canfield, a professor of history at LC State, said she has been inspired by how women respond in times of emergencies, like the COVID-19 pandemic. The event will examine how women have responded during emergencies in history, including wars, other pandemics, and rights movements. Another discussion will examine the massive change mothers went through the past year with work, their children’s education, and family and personal lives in dealing with the pandemic.
The presentations will run at noon-1 p.m. and will be carried live on Zoom.
The first presentation will be on March 1 by Stephanie Mooers Christelow, professor emerita at Idaho State University. She will discuss “Activists and Mystics: Curbing Turbulence in Premodern Europe.” The March 2 presentation is “Motherhood and Work in the midst of a Global Pandemic,” and is by Ryanne Pilgeram, an associate professor of sociology at the University of Idaho.
Robert Bauman, an associate professor of history and academic director of arts at the Washington State University Tri-Cities campus, will speak on “Women in Civil Rights Movement: Some Case Studies” on March 3. The final presentation on March 4 is on “Forging and Flirting: The Gender Strategies of a Dutch Holocaust Rescuer” and will be given by Raymond Sun, associate professor of history at WSU.
The four presentations will be recorded and available later on the LC State website. The events also serve as a lead up to the 2021 Women’s Leadership Conference on March 5, which will be held virtually at 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The registration fee for the conference is $20. For those who can’t make the conference live and still would like to participate, the event will be recorded and made available to watch later for those who register.
