LC State and Lewiston School District partner for teacher scholarships

LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewis-Clark State College Teacher Education & Mathematics Division, in partnership with the Independent School District No. 1 of Lewiston, has created two scholarships for Lewiston High School graduates starting this fall..

The Teacher Preparation Scholarship provides funds for Lewiston High graduates who are seeking a bachelor’s degree in elementary or secondary education at LC State. To qualify, a student must have a minimum high school or college 3.0 GPA and be enrolled full-time at the college (12 or more credits per semester). Provisional admission to LC State’s Teacher Education program is required during the junior year. This scholarship is for $5,000 annually and can be renewed as long as requirements are met.

“This scholarship gives our high school teachers a powerful way to tell promising students they believe they have what it takes to be a teacher,” said Mark Haynal, chair of the Teacher Education & Mathematics Division at LC State. “Now, more than ever, we need to be encouraging our brightest and best students to become teachers.”

The Teach for Lewiston Scholarship is for LHS graduates who are in the third year of the LC State Teacher Education program and are willing to work in the Lewiston School District upon completion of the program. The scholarship provides $2,500 for each of the final two semesters. As with the previous scholarship, a student must have a minimum high school or college 3.0 GPA, be enrolled full-time and have provisional admission to the Teacher Education program.

“Because there is a teacher shortage and competition to hire our outstanding graduates is fierce, this scholarship gives the Lewiston School District an edge in identifying and recruiting the teachers our boys and girls need,” Haynal said.

The applications for the Teacher Preparation Scholarship and the Teach for Lewiston Scholarship can be found online. They must be filled out, returned by mail and received by the application deadline of July 1 to be considered.

A committee of at least two representatives of the Independent School District No. 1 of Lewiston and from LC State’s Teacher Education & Mathematics Division will select the scholarship recipients after reviewing the applications. The school district also will have a pre-internship screening process for applicants of the Teach for Lewiston Scholarship. Both applications include an essay question where the applicant discusses why they want to become a teacher and what abilities and skills they possess that will enable them to become an effective teacher.
