LEWISTON, Idaho – Lewis-Clark State College students and faculty will make two days of presentations during the 14th annual LC State Research Symposium set for May 4-5 at the Williams Conference Center on campus and the Center for Arts & History, located at 415 Main St. in Lewiston. All presentations are free and open to the public.
Students who are seniors and other undergraduate students from the college’s academic divisions participated in research projects associated with their college major. They will present their findings through either discussions and/or posters.
On May 4, there will a faculty showcase panel for the keynote session. The session features seven LC State professors making presentations at noon-1:20 p.m. at the Williams Conference Center. The presenters, their division, and topics include Nancy Johnston, Physical, Life, Movement & Sport Sciences, “Air Pollution Study of the LC Valley;” Sam Coulter, Business Technology & Service, “The Past and Present of Print;” Peter Remien, Humanities, “Bestial Liberty: Freedom and Animality in the Seventeenth Century;” Kylee Britzman, Social Sciences, “Understanding the Messaging Strategies of Social Movements;” Christina Brando-Subis and Teresa A. Carmack, Teacher Education and Mathematics, “The Online Elementary Education Program Does More,” and Charles A. Addo-Quaye, Business & Computer Science, “Volvox scan: A DNA mutation clustering algorithm for population-scale genetics study.”
On May 5, Samuel Levulis, a human factors psychologist, will give the keynote address detailing his journey through a research-focused Ph.D. program at Texas Tech University, his work for General Electric, and most recently his efforts with Microsoft. During graduate school, Levulis conducted research on applied human perception, such as how humans perceive depth and make judgments about movement and collisions, with applications to domains such as driver performance and pedestrian safety. In his talk, he will provide an overview of the user centered design process that his team at Microsoft used to build and ship the first version of a mixed reality headset, and how the form and apparent “rigor” of research varied across the product life cycle while maintaining key elements throughout the process. Levulis has worked the last five years at Microsoft Mixed Reality and focuses on sensor experiences.

Alums taking part: Brian Grimm, Asotin County PUD Wastewater Treatment Plant operator; Gabrielle Dickinson, laboratory analyst at Procter and Gamble; Kyle Knigge, doctor of physical therapy at SPORT Physical Therapy; Osasere Evbuomwan, associate dean of Sciences and Engineering/associate professor of chemistry at the University of San Francisco; Dr. Austin Brown, emergency medicine physician at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center; and Brooke Chase, water right specialist with the Nez Perce Tribe Water Resources Division.
