LC State political science professors plan 2nd annual Student Democracy Day

LEWISTON, Idaho – The second annual “Consent of the Governed: Student Democracy Day” will take place on Aug. 2 in Lewiston and is free for all students age 12 and over.

The civics event is put on by Lewis-Clark State College political science professors Kylee Britzman and Leif Hoffmann and runs 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. The day includes activities, a visit to the Nez Perce National Historic Park, and discussions led by Lewiston mayor Dan Johnson and Lewiston Tribune editor and publisher Nathan Alford.

Students have the opportunity to learn more about how democracy/society operates at the local level as well as familiarize themselves with the political process. It also allows students to learn more about the history of the Lewis-Clark Valley. Students receive a better understanding of political science as a field of study.

Students interested are asked to register by 5 p.m. on July 31 by emailing either Britzman ([email protected]) or Hoffmann ([email protected]). Participating students also are asked to bring a sack lunch.

The broad outline for the day is as follows:

  • 8 a.m. – Meet on the LC State campus in front of the main entrance to the Student Union Building/Center for Student Leadership. There will be an overview of the day by Britzman and Hoffman, followed by activities and games related to politics and government.
  • 9:15 a.m. – Meeting with Lewiston mayor Dan Johnson and tour of City Hall.
  • 10:30 a.m. – Meeting with Lewiston Tribune editor and publisher Nathan Alford and tour of the newspaper facilities.
  • 11:30 a.m. – Lunch at the Lewiston City Library.
  • 1:30 p.m. – Visit at the Nez Perce National Historical Park in Lapwai – watching the park movie and participating in a museum tour and ranger talk.
  • 4:15p.m. – Return to campus and small wrap-up discussion on the day.
  • 4:30 p.m. – Event concludes.
