Primal Forces: Fire

Studio Art Quilt Associates

Fire is the third and final component of our elemental series premiering at the National Quilt Museum. Previous exhibitions included Primal Forces: Earth and Primal Forces: Wind.

This exhibition explores fire not just as a destructive force, but as a symbol of renewal, power, and transformation. Many pieces address themes of climate change, deforestation, and the renewal that comes after devastation, adding a thoughtful and timely narrative to the visual feast.

Experience the heat of creativity as talented artists use vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and innovative techniques to capture the essence of fire. Whether you're drawn to its energy, its danger, or its ability to spark new beginnings, this exhibition will ignite your senses and leave you inspired.

The Symposium

Connor Kelly

Central to Ancient Greek culture, the Symposium was a gathering of conversation, celebration, and wine—where each vessel helped shape the rhythm of the evening. This collection reimagines historic pottery forms in a contemporary context, crafted from locally and sustainably sourced timber that reflects regional forestry and honors ancient traditions.

Each piece is created through a distinctive, sequential process in which the handles are carved directly from the vessel’s own body. Turned on the lathe with intentional excess, the forms are meticulously carved, then ebonized with fire, detailed with red wine, and finished with varnish oil.

These vessels invite you to experience a renewed dialogue between past and present. Each work embodies transformation—of material, form, and meaning—echoing the spirit of the Symposium: a space for connection, contemplation, and the enduring beauty of craft.
