Risk Control Symposium highlights LCSC SBDC offerings in June

LEWISTON, Idaho – A free Risk Control Symposium featuring area risk control specialists highlights the June offerings by the North Central Idaho Small Business Development Center at Lewis-Clark State College.

The seminar, which will include lunch, will be held on June 8 at 8:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m. at the LCSC Williams Conference Center, located on the corner of 4th Street and 9th Avenue.

The day begins with a sign-in along with coffee and pastries at 8:30 a.m., followed by introductions at 8:45 a.m. Paul Burrus, with the law firm of Creason, Moore, Dokken & Giedl in Lewiston, will discuss “Working with your attorney on controlling risk” at 9 a.m. He will talk about how an attorney can help with forming and formalizing business entities, contracts, leases, transferring ownership and lawsuits. He will also discuss employees.

At 10:15 a.m., Cathy Jo Witters, risk management advisor with the Stonebreaker McQuary Agency, will present “Working with your insurance agent on controlling risk.” She will discuss insurance coverage, employee handbooks, cybercrime and safety.

After a buffet lunch at 11:30 a.m. sponsored by the Southeast Washington Economic Development Association, LCSC assistant professor Polly Jo Knutson will cover “Working with your accountant on controlling risk.” Topics she will cover include cash flow, collecting accounts receivables, embezzlement, controls, and understanding the financial situation of a business.

At 1:15 p.m., Barbara Leachman, director of the Region II SBDC, will lead a discussion on comments and evaluations from the day.

Two other Region II SBDC workshops in June will be held at the LCSC Outreach Center in Orofino, located at 416 Johnson Ave.

The first one is QuickBooks 2016 on June 6 and it will run 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The workshop will be taught by Janice Gobbi and has a fee of $80. The class will cover Quickbooks 2016, which is a computerized accounting system that helps a business owner record sales, invoice customers, record deposits, enter and track bills, and write checks.

The other workshop is called “Entering the World Wide Web-Marketing Online and Online Optimization Tips.” It will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on June 21 and has a $10 fee. Chris St. Germaine, the director of Clearwater County Economic Development, will be the instructor. The workshop will cover understanding the languages of websites, what the key parts of a website should be, how to best describe a product or service, and thoughts about cyber security. He will also share tips on how to link business’ website with social media.
