About
Early childhood educators play a critical role during a child's most formative years, and demand for qualified professionals in the field continues to grow. The early childhood development program teaches students about the life and growth of children from birth through age 8.
Participants gain knowledge in many facets of child development, including:
- Cognitive development
- Fine/gross motor physical development
- Social and emotional development
- Language and literacy development
- Self-help skills
Interested students must complete an Early Childhood application packet for acceptance into the program.
Certificates
- The Early Childhood Development Basic Technical Certificate (11 credits) provides the education needed to meet the requirements of the Child Development Associate (CDA) credential, which is needed to work at many preschool and Head Start programs.
- The Early Childhood Development Intermediate Technical Certificate (30 credits) builds on the Basic Technical Certificate and prepares students for entry-level positions such as a private childcare provider, teacher’s assistant, or early childhood classroom aide.
Credits earned in both certificates apply toward the Associate of Applied Science degree.
Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degree
- The Early Childhood Development Associate of Applied Science Degree is a 60-credit option that qualifies students for a variety of early childhood positions.
- The program emphasizes observation, assessment, and planning of curriculum activities to support cognitive development, fine/gross motor physical development, social and emotional development, language and literacy development, and self-help skills of children birth through age eight.
Credits earned for the AAS articulate directly into the LC State General Studies: Early Childhood Education BA/BS degree option.
General Studies: Early Childhood Education BA/BS Degree
The General Studies: Early Childhood Education BA/BS degree builds toward leadership and advancement, preparing graduates for positions such as program director, administrator, or lead teacher.
