Email encryption provides an additional layer of security when sending an email. Email encryption is available to anyone with an Office 365 account. Email encryption converts the message and any attachments into unreadable cipher text. Only the recipient will be able to view the message.

When should I use email encryption?

You should encrypt emails whenever you send confidential data.

Send encrypted email from Outlook (PC)

  1. Click New Email
  2. Click the Options toolbar
  3. On the Options toolbar, click the Encrypt menu
  4. On the Encrypt menu, click the appropriate option (see Encryption Options for more information)
  5. Your new email is now encrypted

Send encrypted email from Outlook (Mac)

  1. Click New Message
  2. Click  ... and choose Customize Toolbar
  3. Select and drag the Encryption icon to the toolbar on the top and click Done
  4. On the Encryption menu, click the appropriate option (see Encryption Options for more information)
  5. Your new email is now encrypted

*note there may be an extra option of “Encrypt” at the bottom of the encryption settings. Please use “Encrypt only” or “Do Not Forward” as instructed in the documentation.

Send encrypted email from Webmail (office.com)

The instructions for Webmail whether on a Mac or PC are the same as the steps when sending from Outlook on a PC.

Encryption Options

Encrypt-Only

  • Message can be read by any type of email account (e.g. LCSC.edu, Gmail, Outlook.com, etc)
  • Receipts can forward, print, or copy content.

Do Not Forward

  • Message can be read by any type of email account (e.g. LCSC.edu, Gmail, Outlook.com, etc)
  • Receipts CANNOT forward, print, or copy content.

  • Message can only be read when opened from an @lcsc.edu account.
  • For proprietary information intended for LC State-internal users only.
  • The content can be modified, replied-to, or forwarded, but CANNOT be copied for printed.

  • For proprietary information intended for LC State-internal users only.
  • The content CANNOT be modified, copied, or printed.  The recipient also CANNOT reply to our forward the message.
